Adding a Stretch Goal to your Crowdfunding Campaign

Once you reach your initial goal, you can create another target to further your impact and inspire your community to keep giving.

What is a Stretch Goal?

A stretch goal is an intentionally ambitious target set beyond the original crowdfunding campaign goal. It’s a new goal stretching your ability to raise more funds!

When and Why You Should Stretch?

You should only consider a stretch goal after you have hit your initial crowdfunding goal or have commitments that exceed your goal. We know that donors are more likely to give once a campaign hits their goal. The campaign becomes a "sure thing" and there is less risk in their donation. Stretch goals are a way to inspire and empower your networks to keep giving.

It’s also important to look at your campaign timeline: how much time is left for you to fundraise? The longer you have left to fundraise, the better shot you have of hitting your stretch goal. If you raise all of the necessary funds in the first few weeks, we encourage you to keep fundraising and aim for even more.

Eagle Street Initiative in North Adams, MA created a $10,000 stretch goal to create more murals, plaques, and art installations along the street.

How Do Stretch Goals Work?

You simply determine your new goal amount and how you will use those funds. If you had a goal of $10,000, consider a stretch goal of $5,000. We recommend you identify how those additional funds will be spent so you can get as many donors engaged and connected to additional improvements to the project.  It’s always best to be as clear as possible about how you plan to spend the funds raised.

There are absolutely no consequences if you fall short of the stretch goal. It's designed to help you capture the donor and community momentum, no risk at all. Here is some sample language we’d suggest for your stretch goal:

“WE DID IT! But let's keep going! You helped us exceed our goal of $50,000! With the overwhelming response and outpouring of support from our community, we know we can do even more. Please help us reach our NEW goal of $75,000!

This new goal will allow us to make A/V and other technology upgrades to make the space more dynamic, opening up even more options for its use. "
